Catatumbo Lightning 3d&2n

Three very diverse days await you! You will enjoy a small nature and birds’ paradise in La Azulita; from there we move on to Puerto Concha, our entering port to the Lake Maracaibo. A boat trip takes us through the mangrove swamp vegetation of the Catatumbo Delta to the stilt houses where we spend the night in hammocks. From April to December we would be able to observe a unique nature spectacle, which is the Catatumbo Lightning. This nature phenomenon is about continuous silent flashes that can be seen up to 10 hours per day, some 200 times per hour.

Itinerary

Day 1:

Private transfer from the airport at El Vigía or from Mérida to Estancia La Bravera, a farm in the heart of the cloud forest, where you can take walks through the forest, surrounded by orchids, bromeliads, and frailejones. You will also have the opportunity to watch a great variety of birds. One of the most impressive things here are the 12 different kinds of hummingbirds that will join us at eating time. Overnight is in small Bungalows, in double rooms. (B, L, D)

Day 2:

After breakfast we leave for Puerto Conchas, which is 90 minutes away from our farm and is the entry port to the Lake Maracaibo. On our boat ride through the mangrove vegetation we have the chance to see howler monkeys and toucans, and maybe we are lucky and see dolphins in the lake. We then get to the tilt houses where we will spend the night in hammocks, where we shall be able to see a colorful sunset. After arrival at Ologa Lagoon and our house, we shall be able to enjoy the spectacular phenomenon that is the Catatumbo Lightning in all its glory. Overnight is in bed or hammock in a shared area. (B, L, D)

Day 3:

We wake early for the sunrise. Today we sail the lake and the channels of the National Park Ciénagas de Juan Manuel, where we could see manaties, caimans, jaguars, river dolphins, white and blue herons, seagulls, and many more animals. At the end of the day we will transfer you to your posada in Mérida. (B,L,--)
